Experience

Every experience leaves a mark. Mine has been shaped by travel, football, music, history, journalism and a lifelong curiosity about people and the world around us. Those experiences have not simply provided memories. They have shaped the way I think, write and understand life.

Born in London in 1955 and raised mainly in Hemel Hempstead, I developed an early fascination with history, football and music before setting off on journeys that would change my perspective forever. Living in Singapore as a child and returning from there to England by boat stopping off in Ceylon, apartheid South Africa – Durban and Cape Town – Senegal and Portugal, followed by backpacking in Spain, Morocco, Portugal, France, Italy,  the Greek islands and Turkey introduced me to different cultures, beliefs and ways of living. Sleeping on beaches, working in vineyards, sharing meals with strangers and travelling with little more than curiosity taught me lessons that no classroom could ever provide.

Football has been another constant throughout my life. As a lifelong Watford supporter and later a football reporter for hospital radio and Capital Gold Sport, I experienced the game from both the terraces and the press box. Football is far more than a sport to me. It reflects passion, loyalty, community and the shared emotions that unite people from every background.

Music has equally influenced my outlook. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Doors and many other artists opened new ways of understanding creativity, peace, spirituality and the human experience. Their work continues to inspire my writing today.

These experiences, together with family life, personal loss, faith and retirement, form the foundation of my writing. Whether exploring travel, history, philosophy, spirituality or everyday life, I strive to write honestly, thoughtfully and with empathy. Every book I write reflects a lifetime spent observing the world, asking questions and searching for meaning rather than certainty.
